Recordings must have been produced originally or compiled from another medium for release as audiobooks. Qualifying audiobooks are defined here as sound recordings containing at least 51 percent spoken word content, duplicated and packaged for sale in the United States as cassettes, compact discs, or originally produced in digital format. Audiobooks need not be derived from or based on a printed book.
- FICTION
For excellence in narration, direction, engineering, and mix of an abridged or unabridged fiction audiobook. This category is for those titles that do not fit into the specific fiction categories below.
- LITERARY FICTION
For excellence in narration, direction, engineering, and mix of an abridged or unabridged audiobook of literary fiction.
- MYSTERY
For excellence in narration, direction, engineering, mix and abridgment when applicable of an unabridged or abridged mystery audiobook, usually featuring a protagonist trying to solve a crime, usually a murder committed early in the story.
- THRILLER/SUSPENSE
For excellence in narration, direction, engineering, mix and abridgment when applicable of an unabridged or abridged thriller/suspense audiobook, usually featuring a protagonist racing to stop a catastrophe from occurring.
- ROMANCE
For excellence in narration, direction, engineering, mix, and an abridgment when applicable of an audiobook of romance, including romantic suspense, historical romance, and other romance subgenres.
- SCIENCE FICTION
For excellence in narration, direction, engineering, mix, and abridgment when applicable of an unabridged or abridged science fiction audiobook.
- INSPIRATIONAL/FAITH-BASED FICTION
For excellence in narration, direction, engineering, mix, and abridgment when applicable of an unabridged or abridged inspirational or faith-based fiction audiobook.
- CLASSIC
For excellence in narration, direction, engineering, mix, and abridgment when applicable of an unabridged or abridged classic of enduring literature (may be in public domain or covered under copyright).
- *ACHIEVEMENT IN ABRIDGMENT
For excellence by an abridger in creating a script for a fiction or non-fiction audiobook, exemplified by a smoothly flowing program that retains the appropriate content, character and plot development, pace, and/or message to create a satisfying audio listening experience.
- NON-FICTION
For excellence in
narration, direction, engineering, abridgment, and mix of an abridged non-fiction audiobook. This category is for titles that do not fit into the specific non-fiction categories below.
- BIOGRAPHY/MEMOIR
For excellence in narration,
direction, engineering, mix, and abridgment when applicable of an unabridged or abridged biography or memoir.
- PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT/MOTIVATIONAL
For
excellence in narration, direction, engineering, mix, and abridgment when applicable of a personal development/motivational audiobook on topics such as personal motivation, emotional/psychological enrichment, self-improvement (not related to employment), and interpersonal relationships.
- BUSINESS INFORMATION/EDUCATIONAL
For
excellence in narration, direction, engineering, mix, and abridgment when applicable of a business/management or educational audiobook on topics including business and professional skills, factual information, crafts or methodology, which augments the study of any subject including foreign languages.
- CHILDREN’S TITLES FOR AGES UP TO 8
For
excellence in narration, direction, engineering, mix, and abridgment when applicable of a children’s audiobook. Audiobooks accompanied by book product are accepted in this category.

- CHILDREN’S TITLES FOR AGES 8-11
For excellence
in narration, direction, engineering, mix, and abridgment when applicable of a children’s audiobook for middle readers.
- CHILDREN’S TITLES FOR AGES 12+
For excellence in narration, direction, engineering, mix, and abridgment when applicable of a young adult audiobook.
- INSPIRATIONAL/SPIRITUAL
For excellence in
narration, direction, engineering, mix, and abridgment when applicable of an inspirational/spiritual audiobook on topics such as religion, spiritual enrichment, the soul, or individual experiences/stories presented to inspire.
- HUMOR
For excellence in narration, direction,
engineering, mix, and abridgment when applicable of a humor audiobook.
- SHORT STORIES/COLLECTIONS
For excellence in narration, direction, engineering, mix, and selection of the elements of a program, which consists of multiple stories, essays, anecdotes, or other short prose elements.
- ORIGINAL WORK
For excellence in narration, direction, engineering, and mix of an audiobook, which is not based on a print work or recording produced for another medium.
- SOLO NARRATION — MALE
For excellence in the solo reading of an audiobook by a male, any category.
- SOLO NARRATION — FEMALE
For excellence in the solo reading of an audiobook by a female, any category.
- NARRATION BY THE AUTHOR or AUTHORS
For excellence in the reading of an audiobook by the author or authors of that audiobook, any category.
- MULTI-VOICED PERFORMANCE
For excellence in a multi-voiced performance of an audiobook, which includes multiple readers with OR without interaction.
- AUDIO DRAMA
For excellence in a dramatic audio performance, which includes an actor or actors portraying one or more fully voiced characters, using interaction and dialogue as key elements. The program may be augmented by sound effects and music.
- AUDIOBOOK ADAPTED FROM ANOTHER MEDIUM For excellence in adapting recordings produced for another medium, such as radio, film, television, or multi-media, to an audiobook format. At least 51% must be spoken.
- PACKAGE DESIGN
For excellence in the aesthetic and physical design of an audio package. Criteria for judging this category include typography, graphic design, showcasing of graphic images on front, back, and spine, ease in use of the physical package, and appropriate labeling information for the consumer. Audiobooks with new packaging may be entered, even though the recording may have been released in a prior period.
- ACHIEVEMENT IN PRODUCTION
For excellence by a producer or director for innovation and achievement in the production of an audiobook program, which exemplifies the highest standards of direction, engineering, and technical achievement. The program may introduce new technology or notable use of resources.
- SPANISH LANGUAGE
For excellence in narration, direction, engineering, mix, and abridgment when applicable of a Spanish language audiobook. Fiction and non-fiction titles are eligible for this category, as are single and multi-voiced productions; learning language titles are not.
AUDIOBOOK OF THE YEAR
A separate Call for Entries will be issued in September 2007 for submissions in the Audiobook of the Year category. Information will be sent to publishers and posted online at www.audiopub.org.
